Tulsa's Travel Team hit the road! We headed down to Austin
to get a taste of some hard hitting Texas style derby.

Final Score: (4) TXRG Hustlers 129 - (u) GCRG 65

Bout Recap by Phil Arnold of Austin, TX

In the first bout of the evening, the Hustlers jumped out to a 12-0 lead by the second jam of the bout to establish the fact they would come out skating hard for their first victory of their season. The Hustlers would score in every jam of the first half against a scrappy Green Country Roller Girls team. In fact, the squad from Tulsa, Oklahoma would outscore the team in purple 31-22 in the last six jams of the first half. At halftime the Hustlers led Green Country 68-41.

Whiskey Birmingham would score a 6-0 jam for Green Country in the third jam of the second half, for the squad from Tulsa's largest scoring jam of the night. The lead would be down to 25 points, but the Hustlers would prove their experience and start drawing the lead out into the 30-point range in the middle portion of the second half. Their defense would step up and shut out the team in green for the last eight jams of the bout, outscoring the squad from Tulsa 30- 0, and finalizing the score 129-65.

Leading scorers for the Hustlers included Barbarella with 39 points, Electra Blu with 25 points, and Lady Stardust with 21 points. Rounding out scoring for the team in purple was Das It with 19 points, and Fearlys with 16 points.
Perhaps the biggest influence in the bout was the Hustlers blocking. Solid Rock was the leading blocker with 11 total blocks. Slim Kickins added 7 blocks to help the team from Austin to nearly a 2-to- 1 blocking advantage in total blocks. Other blockers making solid contributions for the Hustlers included Curvette and Cheap Trixie.

Top scorers for the Green Country Roller Girls included Rosie the Wrecker with 22 points, Syko Path with 20 points and Whiskey Birmingham with 17 points. Impressive blockers for the squad from Tulsa included Krankee Yankee, Elektra Violette, Scarlet Devil, and Dirty D'Amy.

Bout Against Breast Cancer

Final score: (u) NWARG 139 - (u) GCRG 62

Bout Recap by Hailey Hawkeye:
Sunday night the Northwest Arkansas Roller Girls (NWARG) were hosted by the Green Country Roller Girls (GCRG) for the Bout Against Breast Cancer.

GCRG has partnered with Breast Impressions and the Young Survivor Coalition to raise awareness of young women and men who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and have overcome this devastating disease. Skaters from each team volunteered their bodies to be cast, painted by local artists, and then auctioned off. In doing so the leagues were able to raise $2600.00 in the auction for this worthy cause.

In the past month both teams have had a busy schedule NWARG took on Dallas (19) with Dallas taking the bout 104 – 29, and also played Central Oklahoma Roller Derby where NWARG skated away with the score 145 – 41. Respectively GCRG was quite busy too. In the Love Hurts Bout GCRG played Central Arkansas 209 – 17, and Oklahoma Victory Dolls 117 – 45.

This bout was not without action, in what was destined to become a passionate bout. In 2007 GCRG hosted the Route 66 Rebellion where NWARG took first place with GCRG falling into third place.

NWARG is a more established league here in the heartland, but if the attendance of 570 patrons at Sunday’s Bout Against Breast Cancer is any indication, Green Country’s fan base is growing. Not only that, but the fans filling Broken Arrow Roller Sports are rabid for real Roller Derby Action.

GCRG’s new comer Aberition took lead jammer and earned 3 points in the first jam of her first bout with NWARG’s Apache Rose jamming with 4 points. Later in the first period NWARG’s Mellow Yellow proved herself a jammer to take note of with a 15 and 16 point jam. GCRG’s Syko Path who normally sports a pivot panty showed off her jamming skills in a 7 point jam. Referees were kept busy with a host of penalties bringing to mind Dust Devil 2007. The first period ended with NWARG in the lead 91 – 35.

During half time you could hear the fans commenting on the lack of presence by Rosie the Wrecker who along with Syko have become crowd favorites. Sadly Rosie caught a virus and was forced to sit out the bout for medical reasons.

As the second period began it was clear both teams were changing tactics, NWARG sped up the pack with GCRG landing more powerful hits, each team drawing more from their strengths. Early in the second period NWARG’s Danger Darling provided her team with a 10 point jam to widen the spread. Meanwhile GCRG’s Whiskey Birmingham skated the bulk of the jammer duties with GCRG being short a jammer. In the end North West Arkansas’s walls proved too solid for the Green Country Roller Girls offense to break through.
Stats of note: Whiskey Birmingham skated a total of 11 jams as jammer, 6 of which she was lead jammer. Mellow Yellow skated a total of 9 jams, 5 of which she was lead jammer.

Bout Recap by Hailey Hawkeye:

BROKEN ARROW, OK — On Sunday night, Central Arkansas Roller Derby (CARD) traveled to Broken Arrow Roller Sports to meet Oklahoma’s own Green Country Roller Girls competing for the win in the “Love Hurts” Bout. CARD was relatively new to the interleague bouting scene, with only two losses to the River Valley Roller Girls under their belts. WFTDA’s unranked Green Country has been around for a bit longer, and it showed in a lopsided final, as the home team cruised to victory, 209-17.

The huge margin didn’t seem to have too much of a negative effect on a pumped-up home crowd, though. Broken Arrow Roller Sports was packed with loyal GCRG fans — notably, star jammer Rosie the Wrecker had a hulk-esque cheering section matching her hulk-like face for the evening. Syko Path too had a cheering section complete with green wigs and ‘S-Y-K-O’ spelled out across their chests.

Green Country entered with Project Huckleberry leading the way. The tribal sound of the opening drum corps seemed to feed the crowds energy, but it’d be Green Country taking most of that energy. In the 20 jams before half-time, GCRG had already gone up 112 to 7. Bruise Whisperer from CARD was added as the jammer for more jams in the second period, and ended up as her team’s most effective jammer with 8 points in the end — though the night belonged to Rosie the Wrecker, who scored an incredible 123 points (including a 15 point jam and two 14 point jams) and picked up lead jammer status on 18 of 22 trips to the line.

This bout was covered by local station KOTV — check out their story and video here.

Green Country is back in action in just two weeks, set for a bout with the Oklahoma Victory Dolls on February 23 in Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, CARD takes a few months off before getting it on with Memphis in an away bout on June 7.

Bout preview from DerbyNewsNetwork.com

In their second match as a member of WFTDA, Tulsa's Green Country Roller Girls host a Sunday evening rematch against a regional rival non-WFTDA Omaha.

When last these two teams faced each other in August of 2007, Omaha skated away with a significant 135-55 victory at home, and it was just part of an impressive year for Omaha — they went undefeated in 2007, also triumphing over Sioux Falls, North Star, Mid Iowa (twice) and Wichita's ICT Rollergirls. Their last loss was way back in October of 2006,when they went down 186-97 to No Coast.

Green Country, on the other hand, had something of a rockier path through 2007, taking losses to Omaha, River Valley, Big Easy and also finishing 3rd of 5 in their Route 66 Rebellion tournament (behind NWA and Tornado Alley, and ahead of River Valley and ICT.) They did get a thrilling one-point comeback victory over ICT in their most recent bout, though, pulling out that win 87-86 in October — and will be looking to keep that momentum going for the new year.
