Recruitment

Are you thinking to yourself, “Man, this sounds SO cool… but can I do it?” The answer is YES! You can do anything you put your mind to, and we’re here to help.

Join Roller Derby

Here’s How To Get Started

There are several places in and around the Tulsa area that you can go to get your wheels back under you and see how it feels to be rolling again. When the GCRG started in March of 2006 most of us hadn’t skated in over ten years! It just takes time.

You can visit our home rink, Broken Arrow Roller Sports for any of their regular public sessions throughout the week. They include Friday and Saturday night skates from 7pm-11pm that you can enjoy with your kids, if you have them. Visit barollersports.com to view a complete schedule.

Ready To Take the Next Step?

We have a regular weekly practice every Sunday at Broken Arrow Roller Sports that is an open day for new recruits looking to see what we’re about. We also practice every Tuesday and Thursday night from 8-10pm at the same location.

We occasionally take time off for holidays, so be sure to check our current schedule before you come out. You can view our calendar for dates and times. Check back frequently — practices change from time to time.

Skates and Gear

Don’t have skates? That’s ok! The rink has rental skates that they allow us to use.

If you are interested in pursuing derby, it is highly recommended that you look into investing in some higher quality “speed” style skates that are better suited to this type of aggressive roller sport. Skates like these are available in every shape, size, color, and price range at our home rink, Broken Arrow Roller Sports. Their knowledgeable staff will be pleased to help find the right skate for you!

We now require that all roller derby participants and referees in training come with a full set of their own protective gear. The required safety gear is:

  • Black Hockey Helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouth guard

We recommend a good, sturdy quality of pads specifically designed for roller derby. Stay away from Pro Tech knee pads, though. They do not offer enough protection with the abuse we put them through. The best places to get gear is to order online at one of our sponsors, www.rollergirlskates.com or www.switchbladeskate.com.

You can find different sets of safety gear at local sporting stores that can be used by beginning derby girls. They are generally not large or thick enough to provide proper protection for this aggressive sport, so an upgrade would eventually be necessary. Mouth guards can be found at Wal-Mart, or any sporting goods store for just a couple of dollars.

Financial Responsibilities

After your first two free practices, member dues are $40 per month. This money is put right back into the league, and how the money is best spent is decided by league members. Skaters are also required to carry a WFTDA insurance policy. The current rate for this policy is $70 annually.

Time Commitment

Joining the Green Country Roller Girls is a big commitment. If you don’t have time for a part time job, you may not have time for derby. In addition to 7 hours of practice time each week, members are required to be active on a committee.

We take great pride in being a skater owned and operated organization, which means it takes the hard work and input of every single member to keep us rolling. To be considered eligible for placement on a bout roster, skaters must not only pass a minimum skating skills and written test, but be current in dues and attendance requirements. Currently, minimum practice attendance is 60%.

Skating Skills and Rules

We are proud to operate under the high set of standards put in place by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Before becoming a Green Country Roller Girl you will need to pass a test of skating ability, and a written test over the official rules.

Visit the WFTDA website to view and study the most current version of the WFTDA Rules. You’ll also want a copy of the latest versions of the Minimum Skills Requirements and Sample Rules Test.

After you have passed your tests you will be able to submit your new skater name to the national registry, and will be cleared for full contact and scrimmage practices. At that time, individual skater abilities will be reviewed by team captains and the training committee. Eligibility for placement on future bout rosters will be determined by those assessments, along with compliance of attendance and dues requirements.
